Why this is important

  • toddlers & reading

  • preschoolers & reading

  • children who can read
    with some help

  • children who read
    independently

  • WHAT CAN I DO?

This is an important step in your child's development as a reader. Be sure to celebrate this in whatever way you can. But remember that — no matter how skilled a reader is — they can always use your support.

Continue to read aloud with them. Even a few minutes together with a book can be fun for the entire family.

Continue to talk about what you read. Don't be afraid to ask questions about information that confused you or made you wonder. After all, no one knows all the answers. Encourage your child to do the same thing — and to continue asking questions of themselves as they read: What's going on here? Would I have done the same thing? Do I like the way the writer is writing?

Branch out and explore new kinds of books together. Get on the computer together (at home or in your public library or community center) and explore authors you enjoy reading. Be sure to check out our links for some suggestions of places to go on the Internet.

And, as always, continue to make reading and your reader one of the most important things about family life.
