The noncommercial breaks between MPT's children's programs deliver educational
messages specifically designed to complement the series and help children
build the skills they need to become successful learners. The educational
messages develop skills related to information gathering, task completion,
experimentation, negotiating and self-esteem.

To compliment the literacy component of the Ready to Learn Service, Maryland
Public Television distributes PBS Families Magazine, a quarterly
publication filled with programming highlights, tips for parents and caregivers,
and activity sheets designed to be completed by children with their parents.
Currently, more than 40,000 PBS Families Magazines are distributed
to Maryland libraries, schools, and community organizations. Please
visit your local library for copies!

To further support the reading focus of The Ready to Learn Service, a
partnership was developed between the Corporation for Public Broadcasting
and First Book. First Book is a non-profit organization dedicated to putting
books into the hands of children who would not otherwise own them. MPT
distributes First Books as part of its Ready to Learn Service.
