Fishing Baltimore Rowing Club Spider on a Flower

The Million Dollar Lure II
Anglers from around Maryland test their skill in the Maryland Department of Natural Resources’ second annual statewide Fishing Challenge.

Driving the Shell
For many years the public has imagined only limited recreational uses for the Patapsco River. A great place to crab, but you wouldn’t want to swim in some parts of it. Boaters have had no qualms using the branches of the Patapsco as a road to the Bay. But if you look carefully along the banks of the river, you will see evidence of the revival of a sport that once flourished in Baltimore’s watery back yard: boathouses that serve as the headquarters for a number of rowing clubs, including the Baltimore Rowing Club.

Beauty and the Beasts
Maryland is graced with the beauty of rare wild orchids that grow in out-of-the-way places around the state. Botanists are concerned about some species of wild orchids, though, as they fall victim to the ever-expanding hand of man.

Schooner Schooling
Students from around Maryland experience first-hand life on the Chesapeake Bay aboard a “floating classroom,” the schooner Sultana.

Storm drain Sediment Erosion

Hidden Rivers
Hidden Rivers explores the impact that storm water runoff has on streams, creeks, rivers and on the Chesapeake Bay. Each time it rains, millions of gallons of rainwater pours into subterranean pipes, surface concrete culverts, and ditches. The water and everything in it—chemicals, petroleum products and other pollutants—is drained from paved surfaces into a huge network of pipes that dumps it into streams, rivers, and creeks that feed into the Chesapeake Bay. This extraordinary web-like network of subterranean and unseen manmade rivers also carries an overlooked but major pollutant: sediment. Dirt from roads, parking lots, driveways, construction sites and many other sources all contribute to the pollution of the bay and its many tributaries.
