Beyond broadcast, MPT creates instructional videos, develops training, and builds Internet sites that serve tens of thousands of students, teachers, and child-care providers annually. MPT outreach activities, especially relating to arts, culture, and history, take place in all areas of the state to further fulfill MPT's mission.

Education

Maryland Public Television (MPT) uses its statewide reach to provide educational services to more than 1,200 Maryland schools, colleges, and universities. It provides video curriculum materials to teachers and College of the Air telecourses to 40 colleges and universities serving 17,000 students. MPT's educational service has expanded its technology resources with the K-12 Educational Video Service, the National Teacher Training Institute, the Sense and Dollars and EnviroHealth Link Web sites, and live interactive learning experiences such as Bay Trippers: An Online Fieldtrip to the Chesapeake Bay (full press release; download download MS-word format file), Pathways to Freedom: Maryland & the Underground Railroad and Knowing Poe (full press release; download download MS-word format file). MPT produces national and state instructional series such as Conversations in Literature, Numbers Alive!, EnviroMysteries and Teaching the Reader.

  • Thinkport logoThinkport is a five-year initiative by Maryland Public Television and the Johns Hopkins University Center for Technology in Education that aims to improve education in Maryland through cutting-edge technology. At the forefront of the Thinkport initiative is a comprehensive Internet destination designed to help everyone involved in the educational process—teachers, students, family members, and other community members—to work and learn more effectively.

  • Ready to Grow and Ready to Learn
  • Ready to Learn logoReady to Learn was launched in 1994 and represents public television's response to the National Education Goal that by the year 2000, all children will begin school "ready to learn." Maryland Public Television's Ready to Learn Service reaches beyond the television screen to parents, child care providers, educators and children, and encourages active interaction with the quality programming they view on MPT.

    Ready to Grow logoDeveloped in 1999, Ready To Grow is a unique partnership between Maryland Public Television (MPT) and child care providers who care for children ages 6-12. Its goal is to extend children's learning beyond school hours. The service uses quality children's educational television as a springboard for a variety of hands-on, minds-on activities child care providers can use in just about any setting.

Outreach

Maryland Public Television (MPT) is a major resource for the community. MPT Community Learning Ventures outreach services and activities are designed to enhance the educational experiences and cultural vitality of all Marylanders, from preschoolers to senior citizens. MPT is equipped to facilitate community-based learning opportunities, and promote the development and growth of purposeful linkages among groups throughout the state. Working in partnerships with a variety of organizations, MPT Community Learning Ventures plans and implements a range of activities, from public screenings and moderated discussions to intimate study circles. Many projects are ongoing; all are designed to make the best use of educational content infused in on-air broadcasts.
