You might think that kids can't learn about reading and writing from watching television-but that's not exactly true. Television can actually stimulate literacy, if it's followed up with opportunities for children to read, write, or construct stories of their own. After all, what are children's TV shows if not stories put onto the screen?

Families can reinforce the literacy connection in many ways-for instance, by encouraging children to watch programming like Between the Lions, a show about a family of lions who run a very special library. Reading aloud, telling stories together, and completing special projects designed to foster a child's creativity are also effective ways to stimulate learning and literacy.
