This trip begins in Beijing, host of the 2008 Olympic Summer
Games. Tour the Forbidden City, a symbol of power in the center
of Beijing. The complex of palaces, pavilions and gardens
was the ruling seat and living quarters of the Imperial Family
for almost 500 years until the last emperor of China was deposed
in 1921. Before moving on, enjoy a performance of the renowned
Beijing Opera. Walk on the Great Wall. Visit the Ming Tombs
and the Sacred Way. Emperors built elaborate burial grounds
here in order to assure they were as comfortable in death
as they had been in life. Depart from Yichang for a cruise
along the Yangtze River. See the Lesser Three Gorges, characterized
by crystal clear rapids and fantastic coves. Pass through
two of the gorges, Wu Gorge and Qutang Gorge.
On
day 8 water levels will decide whether the day's tour travels
to the ancient city of Wanxian or White Emperor City. After
touring Chongquing's winding stone lanes and outdoor markets
visit Xi'an and see one of the world's great archaeological
treasures - the life-size terra-cotta army, thousands strong,
which guards the tomb of Qin shi Huang, the first emperor
of a unified China.
Spend
the final days of the trip exploring Shanghai, where the ancient
meets the modern, a skyscraper-lined metropolis adorned with
traditional pagodas, temples, teahouses and pavilions.
